Being a yoga teacher requires a wide range of skills; teaching deep philosophical concepts, understanding anatomy and physiology to create safe, beneficial classes for a range of bodies, designing sequences, planning your time, etc etc.

What we tend not to talk about, or think about so much, is the running of your yoga business.

The reality is, that your yoga business needs to be efficient, sustainable, and enjoyable in order for you to share yoga.

If you’re stressed, hungry, worried, about bills, heading for burn out, or even just a bit uninspired, it shows in your teaching. So, putting energy in to your business of teaching yoga isn’t just a good idea, it’s an absolute no-brainer.

But that’s easier said than done for many of us!

This is where I can help.

Yoga Hero Teachers Academy is a one on one coaching service.

Each yoga teacher is different, but working together, we’ll work our way through the steps below, focusing more on some spaces and less on others in a way that makes perfect sense for your yoga business.

Focus on the basics

The most enjoyable and most effective way that you can share yoga with others is teaching what you love, to people who need it, in a format that serves you and them, and earning fairly for it.

To do this, you need to focus on your joys, your strengths, your dreams! When you’re teaching what you’re really passionate about, to people who need it, or love it, or both, it’s exciting; you look forward to researching and planning your classes, and when you come to teach them, people pick up on your passion – it’s contagious! When people love your offerings, they return, and bring friends… and so starts the process of making a fair living whilst doing something you love.

We also need to look at what you need in order for your yoga business to survive and thrive. How much money does it need to make? What outgoings are non-negotiable and what could be put to one side if times get hard. How many hours do you have per week to spend on your business? What happens if you fall ill? Etc. This isn’t the time to be shy. Let’s get the big scary problems, demands, challenges, and make them manageable.

Dream big, why not!

In order to know how to get to where we’re going, we need to know where that is! Do you want to open a studio, do you want to teach internationally? Maybe you want to consistently hold a class in your village hall and be a reliable calming hour for the locals…

Whatever it is, let’s not hold back.

This step is pivotal in getting inspired, motivated, and ensuring that your efforts and dreams are aligned.

Define your yoga offering

Taking the focusing mini-project above, we’ll work together to define your offering as a yoga teacher. Are you best to teach online, or in-person? Do you want to hire somewhere ad-hoc for classes? Or would it be best to open a studio? Who’s your target audience? What’s the best way to communicate with your audience? How much should you charge? All these questions, and more, will be answered with our focused efforts.

Market research can be completely overwhelming; it’s so hard to know where to start. Needless to say, we’ll take the headache out of this and make it step-by-step easy peasy.

Get on brand

Now that we have the information about you, and about your audience, and about where you want to take your yoga business, it’s time to make it happen! This starts with the foundations; creating, refreshing or sharpening up your brand. So many yoga teachers have absolutely beautiful brands, so this step is about either checking that the brand you have resonates with your audience, or defining steps to create or refresh your brand values.

Beyond a logo and colours, your brand values define pricing strategies, workshop offerings, what wording to use in emails, what social media channels to concentrate on, and so so much more. Investing time and effort defining your values will save you untold time and energy in the future.

Get productive

Now it’s time to make it all happen. The above steps are completely vital to define you, your business and your offering, but they’re nothing on their own.

However, knowing how to get going and where to focus your time and energy can be one of the most challenging things of the whole process.

Getting productive is all about the balance of two things: reality, focus.

Reality: Being realistic about the time and energy that you have to focus on your yoga business. You might be full time yoga teacher, and so have a good couple of hours each day. Or you might have a fully time job elsewhere, kids, a house to run and other commitments, so you might be looking at a couple of hours per week. Being realistic is vital to your motivation. If you create a huge list, you won’t get through it and no matter what you HAVE achieved, you’ll feel like you’ve failed.

However if you don’t give yourself enough to do, you won’t make big strides, which is also a problem!

I’ll talk you through how to be realistic AND ambitious to ensure your motivation and inspiration stay high, along with your energy levels; we don’t want you working yourself in to the ground!

Focus: Doing the work! The actual doing of the work is the crux of making progress. I know that sounds so obvious, but it does need saying out loud. It’s so easy to sit down in front of the computer and…. Oooh I better do social media posts to promote the workshop next weekend… Right I’ll create a pretty image. What photo shall I use….. And before you know it, 30 minutes has gone by and yes, you’ve been working, you’ve even ticked a couple of things off your to do list, but what you did perhaps wasn’t quite the best use of your time.

So how do you know what IS the best use of your time? I’m so glad you asked! Focusing is all about simplifying tasks, and to do list, getting clear on priorities so you know exactly what to do next, and you know what definitely needs achieving by the end of the day, and what’s a bonus if you have spare time.

Personal and professional development

As we know, teaching yoga isn’t all running your yoga business; it’s the personal practice, ongoing philosophy and anatomy study, and much more.

Personal and professional development is probably WHY you became a yoga teacher in the first place; to immerse yourself in the practice, to commit to ongoing learning personal inquiry.

So, let’s embrace this! Let’s make it part of you, and part of your business.

To establish your personal and professional development, we first of all need to establish where you are. We’ll start with an exploratory exercise to meet you where you are; how is your understanding of yoga philosophy and / or anatomy. Where do you want to focus your efforts? How does this relate to your business? How is your personal life at the moment? Does anything here conflict, and if so, let’s work through this, patiently, together.

Once we’ve defined your aims here in terms of practice, and ongoing learning, the learning can be interwoven with our sessions, for me to teach you what you need, at your pace, for ongoing personal growth.

Check in

As yoga teachers, we often work in solitude; we teach classes on our own. We travel to and from classes on our own. We work from home.

There’s not usually team mates or a line manager, and there’s not usually anyone keeping us accountable. If we say by the end of the week, we want to have next month’s workshops planned out, but then we get the end of the week with no workshops planned at all, nothing happens. No telling off. No one’s angry, or disappointed, or let down.

Let me be your accountability partner! I won’t tell you off… promise… but I will keep you accountable to what you want to achieve in order to move your business forward.
